     Located on Interstate 40, Weatherford is in Custer County in west-central Oklahoma. It is located one hour west of Oklahoma City. With a 2002 Census population of 14,200, Weatherford is home to Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Climate

  • Weatherford enjoys all four seasons.  The winter brings an average of 11 inches of snow.  The average January temperature in Weatherford is 43 degrees Fahrenheit. The summers are bright and sunny with a July temperature average of 81 degrees. The relatively dry climate receives an average of 28 inches of rain annually.

 General Government

  • Weatherford has a Strong Mayor with Charter type of government. There is a comprehensive plan for the City of Weatherford.

 Public Safety

  • Living in Weatherford is secure. Weatherford has the lowest crime rates of any city of its size in the state. Weatherford has 14 full-time fire personnel, 15 volunteer fire personnel, 19 full-time police officers, 9 communications officers, and one full-time and one part-time animal control officer. The city’s fire insurance has a 3 classification. Along with Oklahoma City and Tulsa, only three cities in Oklahoma have earned this impressive designation. 911 emergency services is also provided county wide and a privately owned ambulance service is available in the city.

 Housing

  • Weatherford has a good housing variety to fit all tastes and price ranges, which includes 5,500 dwellings; 60.0% are owner-occupied.

  Media

  • The Weatherford Daily News publishes a newspaper five days a week and a weekly newspaper.  The Weekly Shopper provides classified listing as well as news.   Wright Wradio locally broadcasts KWEY 95.5 FM, 99.3 KRXO and 1590 AM. Suddenlink, the local Cable Company, provides two channels for local public service programming.

 Tax Structure

  • The City of Weatherford is one of only a few cities with no ad valorem property tax.  Property tax rate is $104.17 per $1,000 assessed value. The fractional assessment percentage for real property is 11.00% and for personal property, 10.00%. The property tax is distributed as follows:

 Sales Taxes

  • The city has a sales tax rate of 4.0%.  In addition, the state levies a 4.5% tax rate on sales.  Custer County levies a sales tax of 0.5% for a total local sales tax of 9%.

  • Weatherford is located on Interstate 40, which is one of the most popular traveled interstates from coast to coast. Daily traffic will average between 27,000 to 37,000 vehicles per day.
